"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.  Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."
Groucho Marx

I write for both adults and children.  This site has excerpts from my novels and complete short stories too.  There are also audio stories, and previews of unpublished work.  I hope you enjoy exploring!  To give me any feedback, find me on Twitter @RobDoddsAuthor, or follow the link to my Amazon page below.

As a 'taster' of my writing, here are two (rather grim) stories told in less than fifty words.  These were entries for Scottish Book Trust's monthly 50 word story competition.  Anyone can enter - follow the link at the bottom of this page if you want to have a go!

THE MAP

I threw down the hateful map.  It curled into itself like a dying animal on the baking sand.  For days I had followed its dotted lines through the desert: twisted lines of lies. Now the looked-for lake was a dish of clay.  Sun-circling raptors stared me down.

THE SILENCE OF THE WOODS

In the silent woods, I see her.  She sees me not.  She follows the path.  I follow her.  She hears my footfall in the leaf mould.  Sssh!  I hide, but let her glimpse.  Her feet fly.  My breath is at her ear.  My teeth.  Her hood turns red.
AUDIO STORIES
